Style 101: What are the top fall/winter fashion trends for 2014-15?

Style 101: What are the top fall/winter fashion trends for 2014-15?

As temperatures cool, investment pieces for modern muses mean cold weather staples. Elle,Fashionista, Glamour and Marie Claire highlight several wearable trends to help update savvy fall/winter style:

1. Sheer Midis, Lace, and Animal Accents

Modesty is major for fall; the ladylike midiskirt is the ultimate transition piece. Max Mara shows only midi length skirts and dresses, many with sheer details paired with oxfords and socks or big sweaters and snug belted jackets, while just a touch of lace in a top or skirt shows for daytime. Finally, designers take a walk on the wild side, incorporating animal motifs; however the new trend is more tiny prints and accents that aren’t obvious until up close and personal.

2. Gray is the New Black; Reds and Blues

Popular base (neutral) colors for fall and winter include black, white and brown. When black and white feel overdone, try the hue that’s a happy medium of both, gray is styled from head to toe this season. If only buying one or two things to update a fall/winter look, reach for something gray. Dark blues are often treated as neutrals; however, red overtakes blue this season. For a modern take on color trends, wear favorite shades from top to bottom, or mix a few and go the color-block route.

3. The New 60’s Mod and Pretty Pastels

The sixties march its way through Milan at Versace and Valentino, especially the short shift dress shape and continue through to Paris in shows like Saint Lauren and Louis Vuitton, while an increasing focus on seasonless dressing shows pretty pastels in accessories and outerwear to perk up gray outfits.

4. Sleek Layered Knits, Velvets and Luxe Sport Plaid and Stripes

Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, and Stella McCartney show layered knits don’t have to be bulky. Pair an unbuttoned knit cardigan over a wool sweater and tailored pants or drape a pretty sweater dress over a pair of leggings and finish with lace-up booties. Never one to completely disappear on the fall runways, velvet, in solid hues and ombre, is fashioned into ankle-skimming dresses and coats, while some designers take velvet to another level with goth-like shapes and choker accessories. Alexander Wang infuses his sporty luxe attitude opening with plaid for the fall, along with stripes in bold colors, while flared and skinny pants show no set rule as both styles depend on what looks best with the top and woman’s silhouette.

5. Textured Coats and Accessories, Jewel Toned Statements

A good coat can elevate an outfit to the next level. Texture is an underlying trend for the season, including quilted jackets and purses. Designers keep the oversized jacket, going with a longer version for colder temps. Throw an oversize wrap coat over a multitude of layers, or go the streamlined route and team it with slim-cut trousers and a thin turtleneck. The robe coat is one of the most versatile trends, offered in just about every color, length and fabric, making for plenty of choices, while modern muffs double as a purse with Balenciaga including a version attached to a coat and Tory Burch adding a neck strap. Finally, jewel tones in embossed totes and clutches allow for statement making without saying a word. Enjoy this article?
