Style 101: What are the top fall/winter fashion trends for 2014-15?

Style 101: What are the top fall/winter fashion trends for 2014-15?

As temperatures cool, investment pieces for modern muses mean cold weather staples. Elle,Fashionista, Glamour and Marie Claire highlight several wearable trends to help update savvy fall/winter style:

1. Sheer Midis, Lace, and Animal Accents

Modesty is major for fall; the ladylike midiskirt is the ultimate transition piece. Max Mara shows only midi length skirts and dresses, many with sheer details paired with oxfords and socks or big sweaters and snug belted jackets, while just a touch of lace in a top or skirt shows for daytime. Finally, designers take a walk on the wild side, incorporating animal motifs; however the new trend is more tiny prints and accents that aren’t obvious until up close and personal.

2. Gray is the New Black; Reds and Blues

Popular base (neutral) colors for fall and winter include black, white and brown. When black and white feel overdone, try the hue that’s a happy medium of both, gray is styled from head to toe this season. If only buying one or two things to update a fall/winter look, reach for something gray. Dark blues are often treated as neutrals; however, red overtakes blue this season. For a modern take on color trends, wear favorite shades from top to bottom, or mix a few and go the color-block route.

3. The New 60’s Mod and Pretty Pastels

The sixties march its way through Milan at Versace and Valentino, especially the short shift dress shape and continue through to Paris in shows like Saint Lauren and Louis Vuitton, while an increasing focus on seasonless dressing shows pretty pastels in accessories and outerwear to perk up gray outfits.

4. Sleek Layered Knits, Velvets and Luxe Sport Plaid and Stripes

Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, and Stella McCartney show layered knits don’t have to be bulky. Pair an unbuttoned knit cardigan over a wool sweater and tailored pants or drape a pretty sweater dress over a pair of leggings and finish with lace-up booties. Never one to completely disappear on the fall runways, velvet, in solid hues and ombre, is fashioned into ankle-skimming dresses and coats, while some designers take velvet to another level with goth-like shapes and choker accessories. Alexander Wang infuses his sporty luxe attitude opening with plaid for the fall, along with stripes in bold colors, while flared and skinny pants show no set rule as both styles depend on what looks best with the top and woman’s silhouette.

5. Textured Coats and Accessories, Jewel Toned Statements

A good coat can elevate an outfit to the next level. Texture is an underlying trend for the season, including quilted jackets and purses. Designers keep the oversized jacket, going with a longer version for colder temps. Throw an oversize wrap coat over a multitude of layers, or go the streamlined route and team it with slim-cut trousers and a thin turtleneck. The robe coat is one of the most versatile trends, offered in just about every color, length and fabric, making for plenty of choices, while modern muffs double as a purse with Balenciaga including a version attached to a coat and Tory Burch adding a neck strap. Finally, jewel tones in embossed totes and clutches allow for statement making without saying a word. Enjoy this article? Cancer Survivor Inspires Head-Dress Campaign

Cancer Survivor Inspires Head-Dress Campaign

LinmiR Millinery will be hosting an ACLT event to raise funds for the charity

AN AWARD-winning headwear brand has used the bravery of a cancer survivor as the inspiration for a fundraising campaign.

Hats and fascinators brand, LinmiR Millinery, is hoping to raise money and awareness for the life-saving work of the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT).

The campaign will be fronted by cancer survivor Diana Kaganda, who hopes that her personal experience will “inspire and instill hope amongst those who are going through the same experience” she was confronted with two years ago.

Kaganda was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in 2012.

She started chemotherapy a week after giving birth to her youngest daughter. She went through five months of intense chemotherapy and radiation therapy and then underwent a bone marrow transplant.

In January 2013, the mother-of-two went into coma twice and spent the beginning of the year in recovery whilst receiving several blood transfusions in order to maintain her health.

Eighteen months on, Kaganda is enjoying life with her two daughters, Eilah, three and and two-year-old Nailah.

She is now actively working with the charity that helped save her life by raising awareness about its good work as well as the disease.

“After my recovery, my passion was to raise awareness of blood cancer and spread awareness to the African-Caribbean and Asian communities to wake up to the fact that many of us are dying because there is simply not enough of us on the bone marrow register and giving blood.”

ACLT was established in 1996 with the primary objective of increasing the number of ethnic minorities on the UK bone marrow, blood and organ donation registers.

The charity was founded by Beverley De-Gale and Orin Lewis, parents of former Leukaemia sufferer Daniel De-Gale, who died from an unrelated health condition on October 8, 2008.

Over the last few years, ACLT has raised the numbers of potential black/mixed race donors from approximately 550 to approximately 60,000 and saved over 60 lives.

To launch the new campaign, the mother-of-two and LinmiR will be hosting the fashion event, Like a Bird: The LinmiR/Diana Kaganda ACLT Fashion Fundraiser where ACLT beneficiaries and supporters will be joining Kaganda for a unique catwalk experience to showcase LinmiR’s new SS2015 headwear collection.

The range, which is inspired by birds and designed by LinmiR Millinery founder Linda Mirembe, includes hats, turbans, fascinators and headbands made from a number of bird feathers, crystals, beads and vintage lace.

From December 13, 10 per cent of LinmiR’s SS2015 sales will be donated to the LinmiR/Diana Kaganda ACLT campaign.

Designers Clisha, Erwin Michalec and wedding stockists Beyond Expectations Bridal will also be presenting complimentary outfits alongside LinmiR Millinery.

The Like a Bird: The LinmiR/Diana Kaganda ACLT Fashion Fundraiser will take place on December 13 2014 in southeast London.

It will be an evening of fashion, entertainment and experience-sharing with cancer survivors and ACLT supporters who will also highlight the charity’s work. ACLT will also be advising on the blood and organ donation process.

Fashion Houston designers green it up for spring

(Photo:green prom dresses)Spring blossomed on the runway for the fifth annual Fashion Houston, the city’s answer to New York Fashion Week, at Wortham Center.

Many of the designers had the same color palette in mind: shades of green. Naeem Khan, Rolando Santana, Rubin Singer and local talent Jonathan Blake all featured punchy green dresses.

Spring fashion shows typically focus on white, black and pastel colors. Not this season, as Houston favorite Chloe Dao showed bold fuchsia skirts and separates, along with navy blue accent pieces. Her floral printed dresses were brought to life with vibrant jewel-tones, including emerald green, and her flowy blue gown with its silver lace apron was one of the looks that drew audience applause.

Miami designer Rene Ruiz, who was featured at the Latin Women’s Initiative luncheon in May, presented a collection chock-full of evening wear.

“I find tremendous support in Houston for fashion,” he said. “We’ve been in Houston stores now for six years, and we’ve grown organically. I’ve never even showed at Miami Fashion Week, so the fact that I’m in Houston is special.”

Designer Rebecca Minkoff, who gave birth to daughter Bowie just three months ago, made her first showing at Fashion Houston with a collection that was both bohemian and sexy.

The best part of designing is the eight minutes that the models are wearing her clothes on the runway of a fashion show, she said. “It takes a year from the concept to when the goods arrive in store. Those eight minutes are the culmination of so much hard work mentally and physically. Everything that we work so hard for is coming to life.”

After the show, she showed off photos of Bowie. “Yes, I’ll be that person with pictures of my kids,” she said. Minkoff also has a 3-year-old son.

Rubin Singer, who designed Beyoncé’s Super Bowl look in 2013, debuted his pre-fall collection at Fashion Houston. He said he wanted to give Houston something that hadn’t been shown previously in New York. The collection showcased his signature draping and textural techniques.

Bibhu Mohapatra, who made his second showing at Fashion Houston, had a tightly edited collection of dreamy separates and day dresses.

“Houston has become like home,” Mohapatra said.Read more at:long prom dresses

Young Russian models were members of ‘dehumanising’ cult prior to deaths, book claims

Ruslana Korshunova, the 20-year-old British Vogue cover girl, who jumped off a New York building in 2008, joined a “dehumanising” cult prior to her death, a new book has revealed.

In his new book about Russia’s post-Soviet oligarchs, Nothing Is True and Everything Is Possible, journalist Peter Pomerantsev claims Korshunova and her friend, fellow Russian model Anastasia Drozdova, became members of the elite Rose of the World cult before ending their lives.

The Rose of the World was a group founded in the US in the 1970s but was closed in the 1980s. It still has several branches operating around the world, including Russia. Members pay about $1200 for a three-day course to undergo “dehumanising” treatments. Training sessions reportedly involve coaches asking participants to share their worst experiences and encourage them to take the blame for all the negative aspects of their lives.

Tragic tale: Ruslana Korshunova on the runway at New York Fashion Week in 2007, a year before she died.

(Photo:MarieProm)During his research for the book, Pomerantsev joined a group where he claims a male leader spoke about Korshunova’s death.

“Ruslana was [a] typical victim. Sometimes it’s better to commit suicide than not to change,” he said.

Korshunova was a member for three months, while Drozdova attended meetings for a year.

Korshunova, who was represented by IMG models – the same agency as Miranda Kerr, Gemma Ward and Karlie Kloss – joined after her short, but successful, career on the international modelling circuit began drying up and her tycoon boyfriend broke up with her. When she died there were no traces of drugs or alcohol in her body and she had no history of mental illness.

Drozdova also jumped to her death from the top of an apartment building in Kiev in 2009, a year after Korshunova, and left a note for her family which said: “Forgive me for everything. Cremate me”.

Other members of the cult who spoke to Pomersantsev denied either model’s death was caused by suicide.

“Korshunova had what we call a ‘rollback’. She felt a little strange. You’d find her wandering round town, unsure what she was doing there. Maybe she’d cry at night. But she couldn’t have killed herself. We cured her of any problems she might have. And Drozdova? She was messed up already. We tried to help her, we really tried. But she refused transformation. Blame modelling, maybe drugs, not us.”Read more at:MarieProm Prom Dresses
