Jennifer Aniston’s top 15 fashion moments

Jennifer Aniston’s top 15 fashion moments

Jennifer Aniston burst onto the scene in the 1990s as the fresh-faced, all-American girl you couldn’t help but love. Lately, however, the former Friends star has been trying to shed her girl-next-door image for edgier roles – and it seems that her efforts to be taken seriously as a dramatic actress have finally paid off.

Up for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (drama) for her standout role in Cake, the actress reacted to news of her Golden Globes nomination with poise and grace. “I’m just humbled,” she told Entertainment Weekly.

Jennifer, 45, was first nominated for a Golden Globe in 2002 for her role as Rachel Green in Friends, but this is the first time she’s been recognized for a dramatic role, leading many to wonder if she’ll also garner an Oscar nod.

But while Jen’s acting style has undoubtedly changed over the years, one thing has remained very much the same – her effortless, fuss-free sense of style.

Ever since ‘The Rachel’ hairstyle made its debut in the ‘90s, we’ve been coveting the star’s sleek, California-girl look. The comedienne, who is known for her minimalist sensibility on the red carpet, may not be the most daring fashionista out there, but Justin Theroux’s leading lady knows what works for her (and always looks sensational).

As she prepares for red-carpet season – where Jennifer will undoubtedly sport a number of chic looks – Hello! Onlinelooks back at some of her most iconic style moments through the years.

Royal Navy sailor goes from size 18 to size 8 in just a year

Royal Navy sailor goes from size 18 to size 8 in just a year

The 32-year-old said that even touring in Afghanistan couldn’t keep the weight off

A Royal Navy sailor dropped more than three stone in just a year so she could ditch her size 18 wedding dress for a slinky size 8.

Gemma Allardyce, 32, said that even when serving in Afghanistan she was still extremely overweight because of the five meals a day the Navy provide, as well as all the unhealthy snacking while on tour.

She also confessed that she was a serial yo-yo dieter and that her weight would fluctuate up to 13 stone, meaning she had to pick out a size 18 wedding gown last year.

But now, after a year at Slimming World, Gemma was able to surprise her loved ones at her wedding this June to fiance James with her new svelte size eight frame.

She said: “It’s the lifestyle in the Navy.

“There are two chefs on board so you get your five-a-day but there’s always unhealthy food around.

“You’ve got to be fit in the Navy but you don’t have to be slim.”

In May when Gemma, from North Shields, Tyne and Wear, went for her final fitting the dress makers were bowled over by her dramatic weight loss and practically had to take her gown apart and re-design it to fit her newly petite figure.

Gemma said: “It [the dress] was slipping off.

“They had to pin it all the way down and there were huge flaps down the sides where they had to pin it too.

“They almost took the dress apart and put it back together again.

Having dropped a total of 2st 13lbs to hit her target weight of 9st 11lbs, her new look was revealed to many family and friends for the first time on her big day.

“I was really excited because I wanted natural pictures taken but in the past I was always having to hold myself in and lift my head up.

“When I saw the pictures there were so many that had been taken when I didn’t even know the photographer was there – and I’m smiling and natural looking.”

BOOKS: Fashion comes and goes but style spans decades

BOOKS: Fashion comes and goes but style spans decades

Fashion is always simultaneously looking forward and back.

Elements of previous decades can show up in tailoring, textiles, embellishments or other aspects of a garment’s construction. A constantly changing notion, fashions will come and go but within it a sense of style will always stand out.

In vintage fashion it is important to seek out those clothes and accessories that demand to be worn because they are the most attractive and the most wearable items from past years.

Albrechtsen presents this look at past fashions into three sections: Decades, Elements and Hallmarks. In Decades, the 1920s through to the 1980s are examined with an eye to the iconic styles from each era. In Elements, fashion is looked at by genres including everything from bathing suits to wedding dresses, with special sections on those accessories that stood out. The last part, Hallmarks, looks at those unique themes that have come to represent vintage fashion, such as nautical and botanical themes, or the Little Black Dress that has been reworked for every decade.

Throughout the book hundreds of garments are shown, mostly on mannequins, but also with fashion photos of the day and illustrations. The information that appears with every photo is a mini history lesson and offers great background details on the specifics of each item.

Hot Holiday Trend: The Red Dress Red Lip Combo

Hot Holiday Trend: The Red Dress Red Lip Combo

Tis the season to rock red. And celebs—who are apparently in full holiday mode—have taken that statement to the next level by pairing red dresses with fiery crimson (or deep red) lipstick. Tia Hebron, Bobbi Brown Pro Team Makeup Artist, tells you how to pull of this matchy-matchy trend without a hitch.

The RunWay

“Exactly matching cherry lipstick with a your dress is a very runway take on the red-on-red trend. This strategy is for the fashion-forward girl who already owns five other red lip colors and just wants to play,” says Hebron. Her suggestion for all you beauty junkies out there is to find a matte red hue (Editor’s Pick: Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl, $25) and make the rest of your makeup a complementary juxtaposition—subtle rather than bright, neutral rather than daring. Wear a flattering golden shadow, like Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow in Copper ($25) on your eyes paired with pastel nails (Hebron loved Jessica White’s lavender polish). “A navy liner looks great paired with red and brightens the eyes,” says Hebron.

The Real Way

“Wearing an exact match might be a bit much for some women,” says Hebron. A subtle way to embrace your crimson crush is to select a lip shade that’s close to your dress color, but not an exact match. “Picking a red lipstick sometimes gets overly complicated,” says Hebron. “I think a woman should go to a counter, try on all the reds that catch her eye, and go with the one that makes her feel pretty powerful.” If you need a little more guidance when picking your signature scarlet, try looking for a “true red,” one that’s neutral in tone. They’re flattering all all skin tones and will channel that old school Hollywood starlet vibe. We love Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss in 01 ($6). But truly the key is not to stress over it. Red lipstick should be fun! Pop it on with your fiery red dress, and you’re ready for a merry night on the town.

12 safety tips of Christmas

12 safety tips of Christmas

The staff and volunteers at the Red Cross offer these safety tips to help keep the season safe, happy and bright.

•1. Prepare your vehicle for traveling to grandmother’s house. Build an emergency kit and include items such as blankets, jumper cables, road maps, shovel and extra clothing.

•2. Drive your sleigh and reindeer safely. Avoid driving in a storm. If you must travel in bad weather, let someone know where you are going and when you expect to arrive.

•3. Help prevent the spread of the flu. Stay home if you’re sick. Wash hands with soap and water as often as possible, or use an alcohol-based hand rub.

•4. Follow Santa’s fashion lead — dress in layers. When it’s cold outside, layered lightweight clothing will keep you warmer than a single heavy coat.

•5. Use a trained baby sitter when attending holiday festivities. Red Cross-certified baby sitters learn to administer basic first aid, properly hold and feed a child and monitor safe play.

•6. Avoid danger while roasting chestnuts on an open fire. Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen even for a short period of time, turn off the stove.

•7. Be a lifesaver during the holidays. The Red Cross recommends that at least one person in every household have first aid and CPR/AED training.

•8. Designate a driver or skip the holiday cheer. Buckle up, slow down, don’t drive impaired.

•9. When the weather outside is frightful, heat your home safely. Never use your stove or oven to heat your home. Never leave portable heaters or fireplaces unattended. Install smoke alarms!

•10. Cut down on your heating bills without being a Grinch. Get your furnace cleaned and change the filters. Make sure your furniture isn’t blocking the heat vents.

•11. Going home for the holidays? Travel safely. Give your full attention to the road — avoid distractions such as cellphones.

•12. Resolve to Be Red Cross Ready in the New Year. Get ready now for emergencies in the coming year.
