Fashion Houston designers green it up for spring

(Photo:green prom dresses)Spring blossomed on the runway for the fifth annual Fashion Houston, the city’s answer to New York Fashion Week, at Wortham Center.

Many of the designers had the same color palette in mind: shades of green. Naeem Khan, Rolando Santana, Rubin Singer and local talent Jonathan Blake all featured punchy green dresses.

Spring fashion shows typically focus on white, black and pastel colors. Not this season, as Houston favorite Chloe Dao showed bold fuchsia skirts and separates, along with navy blue accent pieces. Her floral printed dresses were brought to life with vibrant jewel-tones, including emerald green, and her flowy blue gown with its silver lace apron was one of the looks that drew audience applause.

Miami designer Rene Ruiz, who was featured at the Latin Women’s Initiative luncheon in May, presented a collection chock-full of evening wear.

“I find tremendous support in Houston for fashion,” he said. “We’ve been in Houston stores now for six years, and we’ve grown organically. I’ve never even showed at Miami Fashion Week, so the fact that I’m in Houston is special.”

Designer Rebecca Minkoff, who gave birth to daughter Bowie just three months ago, made her first showing at Fashion Houston with a collection that was both bohemian and sexy.

The best part of designing is the eight minutes that the models are wearing her clothes on the runway of a fashion show, she said. “It takes a year from the concept to when the goods arrive in store. Those eight minutes are the culmination of so much hard work mentally and physically. Everything that we work so hard for is coming to life.”

After the show, she showed off photos of Bowie. “Yes, I’ll be that person with pictures of my kids,” she said. Minkoff also has a 3-year-old son.

Rubin Singer, who designed Beyoncé’s Super Bowl look in 2013, debuted his pre-fall collection at Fashion Houston. He said he wanted to give Houston something that hadn’t been shown previously in New York. The collection showcased his signature draping and textural techniques.

Bibhu Mohapatra, who made his second showing at Fashion Houston, had a tightly edited collection of dreamy separates and day dresses.

“Houston has become like home,” Mohapatra said.Read more at:long prom dresses
