Fashion students showcase their designs

(Photo:MarieProm)Southern Institute of Technology students are all set for tonight’s Axis fashion show.

More than 100 garments will hit the runway during the event, held to showcase the graduates’ work during their studies. The garments will be modelled to a backdrop of live contemporary music.

Each student will exhibit six crafted garments, including one couture piece.

The show will also include a screening from SIT film and animation students.

Fashion tutor Melissa James said the show was more than simply fashion, it was an opportunity for students to explore and engage with the business aspects of the industry.

Students were not often presented opportunities such as those the show offered, she said.

Axis gave students a chance to network and have industry experience, which was vital for students post graduation, she said.

Jessie Gillies, 22, is one student whose work is included in the exhibition. She is also a member of the Axis organisation committee.

She described the showcase as a fusion of creativity and innovation.

The general atmosphere in the dressing room was overwhelming, she said.

“We are all very excited, we won’t be fully relaxed till it’s all over” she said

The world of fashion was small in Invercargill and the show aimed to encourage the interest of industry, Gillies said.

“We are trying to get more industry representatives here because I think we do have something for them.”

Axis starts at 7pm at the SIT Centre stage Theatre. Tickets cost $10 and are available at the door.Read more at:MarieProm evening dresses
